When Finch activates the robot he reminds him of his four prime directives. The first is Isaac Asimov's first law of robotics.
Finch's small robot is named Dewey in a nod to the robots Huey, Louie and Dewey in Silent Running (1972). In Silent Running a man is left alone with only the company of his robots and teaches Dewey how to look after the plants in the garden on a spaceship.
Timeline and age of Finch: The San Francisco postcard is copyright 1984, and coincides with the release date of the stamp on it and the cost of sending a postcard at that time period. Finch says he was 15 when he received the postcard, indicating that he was born in 1969 or 1970. The apocalypse survival book was dated 2028 and there was mention of the solar flare being 15 years ago. This would put the timeline of the movie at sometime in 2043 or later. This would make Finch over 70 in the movie.
To support his weight, Jeff had to put a metal case under his camping chair to safely sit on it.
The music used in the Official Trailer is a variation of Hans Zimmer's score for True Romance (1993), specifically the track "You're So Cool".
