Jason Mewes was originally supposed to play all the monsters in this film. Due to his claustrophobia, he couldn't even make it through make-up tests that required heavy facial prosthetics and full body costumes. Haley Joel Osment was offered the roles next, but his manager declined. Writer and director Kevin Smith ended up playing the monsters himself. The prosthetic make-up required him to shave his face for the first time in 20 years.
This movie is set in the same world as Kevin Smith's film Tusk (2014). It features supporting characters from the earlier film, recasts the stars in new roles, and contains some hints of an epilogue. It is also the second film in his Canadian-based horror trilogy, The True North Trilogy. The final film will be Moose Jaws.
The moles on Johhny Depp's character face move to different places in each scene.
Lily-Rose Depp is real-life best friends with her co-star, Harley Quinn Smith. They met at the Hollywood Schoolhouse in Kindergarten.
On the SMODCAST episode #327 (titled "Meesa Kills") Scott Mosier recorded his vocal cameo for the film live on the podcast.
