After Tom Hardy and Channing Tatum left the project over creative changes in the rewritten script, a month later, Ben Affleck and Oscar Isaac took over the respective roles.
The baseball cap worn by Francisco "Catfish" Morales (Pedro Pascal) features the logo for Standard Heating Oil the company run by Abel Morales (Oscar Isaac) in the 2014 film A Most Violent Year (2014) also directed by J.C. Chandor.
Tres Fronteras (Portuguese: Três Fronteiras, English: Three Frontiers) is the Spanish name for an area of the Amazon Rainforest in the Upper Amazon region of South America. It includes, and is named for, the tripoint where the borders of Brazil, Peru, and Colombia meet. The upper Amazon River flows through the area. The Triple Frontier is actually a tri-border area along the junction of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay.
In April 2017, Paramount decided to not move forward with the project when stars Tom Hardy and Channing Tatum dropped out after disagreements with the rewritten script. The movie was picked up by Netflix a month later. Ben Affleck, who took over from Hardy, later added that another consideration to approach Netflix was that the previous study wanted no Spanish to be spoken in the film, even though the first 20 minutes were exclusively scripted in Spanish; Netflix fortunately had no such reservations.
Some of the cast were trained by real Navy SEALs to make the action appear more authentic.
"Santiago 'Pope' Garcia: You've been shot 5 times for your country and you can't even afford to send your kids to college."
"[first lines] Retainment Officer: [at the podium] I have the honor today to introduce you to Retired Captain William Miller. He's been everywhere in the world you all wanna go, and a bunch of places you don't. I've asked him to come and talk to you all today at this important crossroad in your careers. I'm gonna step out so this conversation can be frank and to the point. William 'Ironhead' Miller: About five years ago, when I was on leave... I found myself standing in the middle of the cereal aisle at the Publix... with my arm around some guy's throat. I was squeezing so hard he pissed himself. My fiance at the time had to climb on my back just so I didn't actually kill the guy. Do you know why I was doing this? Because he hadn't moved his cart when I asked. William 'Ironhead' Miller: I was the best of the best, able to shut down, control, manipulate; all basic human instincts towards one goal: The completion of my mission. But the effects of committing extreme violence on other human beings are biological and physiological. That's the price of being a warrior."
