In July 2019, The Hollywood Reporter said that the film had left test audiences confused, so the release date was pushed from 2019 to 2020 as the studio worked on reshoots. The Woman in the Window was the final film from Fox 2000 before it shuttered in the wake of the Disney-Fox merger, and this was one of the final setbacks that the film faced. "We're dealing with a complex novel," Fox 2000 president Elizabeth Gabler told THR "We tested the movie really early for that very reason. We wanted to make it better, and we've had Disney's full support in doing that." Director Joe Wright planned five days for pick-up shots aimed at getting the film back on track.
Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor were originally hired to score the film. After the film's release was delayed and the film went back into production, it was announced that they were replaced by Danny Elfman.
Liza Colón-Zayas was cast as Bina, Anna's physical therapist, but all of her scenes were edited out.
Joe Wright was attracted to the project because he liked the challenge of making a film largely set in one house. (Wright is famous for elaborate setpieces with camera tracking, in such films as Atonement (2007) and Anna Karenina (2012).)
Tony Gilroy was hired to do some uncredited rewrites when the film's initial screenings tested poorly.
"Anna Fox: You don't think it's paranoid if I wanna change the locks. Do you?"
"Alistair Russell: See you at the block party!"
