The Offering Review

Oliver Park's The Offering is a well-crafted horror movie that embraces tested-and-approved horror tropes while delivering a solid execution that results in a satisfying viewing experience. The movie revolves around a demonic entity that messes up its victims' minds, making them see things that are not there. This demon can shapeshift and take the form of dead people, coming from an Orthodox Jewish tradition. The reverse-exorcism storyline is elevated by the creepy setting of a funerary home, where dead bodies unleash supernatural horror. The movie strikes a good balance between explaining the supernatural rules that govern the dybbuk and embracing the unknown, this powerful force that enlarges our fears. The Offering also features a surprisingly solid human core, with a competent cast charged with bringing flawed characters dealing with their faith, childhood traumas, and family bonds. While the movie is still too reliant on jumpscares, it leaves enough unexplained to entice the viewer's curiosity about a culture most of us don't know much about. The strategy also leaves enough cracks for the nightmarish creature to slip through. The Offering doesn't offer groundbreaking characters or a thoughtful message hidden behind surprising metaphors, but it delivers what it promises: spooky children, distorted reflections in mirrors, and flickering lights. It's a predictable story, but one that was polished enough to make it well worth your time. The Offering is a must-watch for horror fans who enjoy well-crafted scares and real emotional stakes.
