After ten films teamed together, this film was the final feature film collaboration of actors Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon.
This sequel to The Odd Couple (1968) was made and released about 30 years after the original. The movie is significant in film history for being one of the longest gaps between the release of the original film and a sequel where all the main lead actors actually reprise their roles. Later, the record was beaten by 11 years, as the film Goin' Down The Road (1970) and it's sequel Down The Road Again (2011) featured the surviving main cast and original director, 41 years apart.
Final of six appearances by Walter Matthau in a Neil Simon written film. The others were The Odd Couple (1968); Plaza Suite (1971); The Sunshine Boys (1975), California Suite (1978) and I Ought to Be in Pictures (1982).
This Neil Simon movie was written directly for the screen and was not based on a Neil Simon play as many of his other films had been, such as the original The Odd Couple (1968).
The penultimate theatrical feature film for both Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon. Matthau's last was Hanging Up (2000) whilst Lemmon's last was The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000).
"Sheriff: Okay, now explain to me one more time how the rental car caught fire and exploded. Oscar Madison: He called me a shithead and punched the car, it went rolling down a cliff. Sheriff: Why did you punch the car? Felix Ungar: Because the shithead threw the directions out the window and left my suitcase at the rental car agency. Sheriff: Why did you throw the directions out the window? Oscar Madison: Because they caught fire from my cigar ashes and were burning on my crotch! Felix Ungar: The first time he's been hot down there for years. Oscar Madison: I just wanted you to know what it felt like down there... Sheriff: OK, boys, settle down. You two don't get along too well, do you? Oscar Madison: Oh, that's not true. There was a period of 17 years that was wonderful. Then unfortunately we saw each other again. Sheriff: And who did you say was getting married? Felix Ungar: My daughter and his son. [the Sheriff and all the deputies have to swallow a laugh]"
"Felix Ungar: [waking up in the car] How long was I asleep? Oscar Madison: [driving] I don't know. I didn't know you wanted me to time it."
