It took around five hours a day to put the prosthetics and make-up on actor Clancy Brown to turn him into the Frankenstein monster Viktor. This included about three and a half hours to put it on and two hours to take it off.
Quentin Crisp (Dr. Zahlus) was a distant cousin of Boris Karloff, who played Frankenstein's Monster in Frankenstein (1931), The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) and Son of Frankenstein (1939) and Baron Frankenstein in Frankenstein 1970 (1958).
This remake of The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) was made and released in 1985 which was the 50th anniversary year of the original film which had debuted in 1935. Original bride Elsa Lanchester was still alive at the time but in poor health; she passed away in 1986.
Originally, Sting was going to play Josef, Eva's love-interest military officer and Baron Frankenstein's rival.
When a nude Eva walks into the living room, with her face and top half blackened out, it was Jennifer Beals's body double. Director Franc Roddam on his audio-commentary said Beals didn't want to do it.
"Eva: You can do what you like! You can take apart the body you put together, you can take away the life you gave me, but you cannot have me. Not ever. Not even if you murder me and raise me up a thousand thousand times, you cannot have me."
"Eva: You taught me out of books, but I have a life of my own. Eva: You didn't create me! You didn't create ME! Baron Charles Frankenstein: As a matter of fact... I did."
