IMDbThe film was in development for many, many years. In its earliest stages, it was planned as a directorial project for Sam Peckinpah.
The battle at Palo Alto did happen where the rangers were ambushed and one of the youngest rangers to be killed there was 14. He was given full military honors and is buried at Fort Ringgold near Brownsville., Texas.
James Van Der Beek had never ridden a horse prior to this movie.
The Texas area Brownsville looks nothing like it. Brownsville is mostly sandy and arid and its very close to the Gulf of Mexico.
