Both Anya Taylor-Joy and Shea Whigham were set as the leads before dropping out. They were replaced by Sophie Turner and Dylan McDermott.

In the scene in which Hank and Josie are at the marina, Josie suggests that Hank should buy a boat named Tortuga. Tortuga is Spanish for "tortoise". Hank has two pet tortoises in the film.
"Josie: So what did you do before? Hank: I wasn't cutting corpses, but I did do something kind of weird, I don't feel good to think about it so I don't. Josie: Like what? Hank: I lived in Huntsville, Texas, you know it? Josie: Never heard of it. Hank: Didn't think you would. Small place, unremarkable, but there's a prison there that executes more people than anywhere in the country. I started working there when I was just 20 years old, just a regular guard, then they put me on Tie-Down Team. Josie: What's that? Hank: Just as it sounds, really. We was responsible for securing the inmates to the gurney, tying down the straps, making sure he couldn't move. IVs would go in, shades would fly up, so people that came to see could watch. Last words were said, then this doctor hits a switch and just watch the man, or woman, take their last breath. Josie: Jesus, that's heavy. Hank: Yeah. Was a heavy job. Josie: Why'd you leave? Hank: Found out we killed someone, who shouldn't have been killed."
