Ye Xiang Lun is a music student majoring in piano who just transferred to Tamkang, a school famous for its musically talented students, especially those who play piano. On his first day of school, he hears a mysterious melody being played, and following it meets Lu Xiao Yu, another piano major. When he asks her about the song she was playing, she tells him that it is a secret that cannot be told. The two form a friendship that quickly evolves into a romantic relationship. The date on the board when Xiao Yu first goes to class is January 18, 1979--Jay Chou's birthday.
Some of the roles are filled by acquaintances of Jay Chou's. As such Ah Bao, Yu Hao the "Prince Of Piano," and the record-store owner are played by members of the Taïwanese pop band Nan Quan Mama and friends of Chou's, two of the teachers are played by people from his record company, Ah Lang is played by one of the lyricists, Da Yong the caretaker by his makeup artist, the biology teacher by his father, and his aunt at the market by his mother. Anthony Chau-Sang Wong had previously played his father in Initial D (2005).
