Cary Elwes reprised his role as his character, Dr. Gordon, from Saw (2004), for this film. Disputes over his salary caused him to file a lawsuit and, as a result, decline opportunities to return for previous films in the series when offered. However, after the lawsuit was finally settled out of court, Elwes agreed that he would return for, what was thought to be, the final entry in the series. This is the last time Elwes appeared in the series.
Despite receiving top billing and portraying the main villain, Tobin Bell has only three minutes of screen time in this film.
In a Massachusetts branch of Showcase Cinemas, this film was accidentally screened instead of the 3D animated film Megamind (2010), traumatizing its young audience.
Had to be submitted six times to obtain an R rating from the MPAA to avoid an NC-17 rating.
Originally intended by the writers to be two films, "Saw: The Final Chapter: Parts 1 & 2" with Cary Elwes' return being the finale of Part 1 and then Part 2 would tie everything up. After Saw VI (2009) didn't do well at the box office, Lionsgate decided that the two parts would be turned into a single film. The producers and writers stated that lost elements from the original two-part script might be used in future sequels or prequels.
"Jigsaw: Hello Dr. Gordon. You are perhaps my greatest asset. Without you, my work over the last few years would not have been possible. That having been said, I have a request. Watch over Jill, and should anything happen to her, I want you to act immediately on my behalf. In return for that, I will keep no more secrets from you. I've shown you a lot of places, but there is one that will be perhaps the most meaningful to you."
"Hoffman: You wanna know the only thing wrong with killing you, Jill? I can only do it once."
