Pankaj Tripathi originally turned down the role of Salim because he did not speak English. But, director John Upchurch insisted that Pankaj Tripathi's acting spoke all languages. In the end, Pankaj Tripathi accepted the role and delivered a critically acclaimed performance.
Many members of the crew appeared in the film. The police inspector was played by Co-Director, Faraz Ahsan. The Pavaan Hotel reception was played by Chief Assistant Director, Mohit Pal. The snooty waiter was played by Photographer, Kabir M. Love. All extras in the film were either crew or real people.
Mango Dreams had a failed Kickstarter campaign in 2013. The film was ultimately self-financed, but the original supporters from the failed Kickstarter were thanked in the end credits for their support.
The Border Officer was played by Riju Baja, the real life son of Doctor Saab.
In May 2017, 'Mango Dreams' was awarded as Best Narrative Feature in Calcutta International Cult Film Festival, in India.
