Set in the same universe as the feature film Love, Simon (2018) which was inspired by Becky Albertalli's young adult novel 'Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda'.
On February 24th, 2020, it was announced the series would move from Disney+ to Hulu for a Pride 2020 release. It marks the second intended for Disney+ series that has ended up on Hulu, after High Fidelity (2020).
Michael Cimino has said that his gay cousin helped shape the character of Victor, as a way to represent his struggle.
Johnny Sequoyah was cast as Mia but was replaced by Rachel Hilson. As reported by Deadline, the recasting was as a result of the decision to take the character in a new direction creatively.
