IMDbThe life of a migrant is shown from an entirely new angle in Ben Sharrock's bleak comedy-drama. Musician Omar (the brilliant Amir El-Masry) is currently residing in a bleak refugee facility on a remote Scottish island after fleeing the turmoil in his own Syria. He waits in uncertainty as his destiny is decided by others, cut off from his home and family. Open antagonism, friendship offers, and modest deeds of compassion from the people all around Omar are indicative of his terrible circumstances. A stunning, heartbreakingly moving story that will warm your soul while also breaking your heart. According to Catholic doctrine, limbo is a hopeless, joyless space between worlds. Even though it's not exactly the case, it may be. Ben Sharrock, a Scottish writer, and filmmaker focus on four young men who are experiencing extraordinary boredom. Taking his lead from reality—some European nations do send asylum seekers to isolated settlements while they wait months or even years to learn about their fate—Sharrock sends them to these places. This narrative about physical and spiritual exile is sarcastic and idiosyncratic, and there are undoubtedly politics at work as well as poetry.

Debuting director Ben Sharrock has a strong background in Arab history and suffering that informed his screenplay. He studied Arabic and politics for his undergraduate degree, lived in Damascus for the third year of his degree until the break-out of civil war in 2011 and worked in refugee camps in Algeria.
Given the difficult subject matter of refugees, Ben Sharrock was quite surprised in talking to people who had fled their home countries that many of them took comfort in humor. That's why he deliberately incorporated a lot of humor into his screenplay.
Although the main location is never specified, the film was actually shot on the Uist Islands in the Outer Hebrides.
Ben Sharrock wrote the screenplay whilst staying on Uist. He'd never heard of the place before but a quick look on Google Maps showed him how remote it was. He found the experience to be really creatively liberating - though the lack of wi-fi on the islands was an issue.
This is the first feature film to be shot on the islands of Uist.
