This was the first Mexican film that showed the name of the official Party (Partido Revolucionario Institucional, or P.R.I.). In past times, filmmakers had to change the party's name to avoid censorship.
This movie's release was forbidden for several years. From the time that filming started, the Mexican government wasn't happy about it, mainly because it presented a bad image of that administration. The filmmakers fought back, and the conflict reached the press, so the movie had to be released, to avoid rumors about political censorship.
When he meets the Gringo for the first time, Juan Vargas says his name is "Emilio Gabriel Fernández Figueroa" recalling Golden Age's director Emilio Fernández and cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa.
Pek is mayan for dog. Pek is the assistant to mayor Vargas.
The names of the other candidates for municipal governor are "Contador Carlos Portillo" and "Pedro Marco A. Hurtado."
"Juan Vargas: No me hables en inglés, hijo de la chingada; ahora si, pinche gringo, se acabó la deuda externa!"
