At the end of the movie, before the credits, a list appears onscreen of 37 real-life court cases by Christian students suing colleges because they feel that administrators are not allowing them to practice their faith. None of the cases parallel the film, but many involve Christians expressing unpopular viewpoints about controversial issues.
Although they play unbelieving characters in the movie, both Kevin Sorbo and Dean Cain are Christians. The former plays a misotheist (a person who believes in, but has a hatred for God), and the latter plays an atheist (a person who does not believe God exists).
Pure Flix Entertainment is fighting a lawsuit by Kelly Monroe Kullberg and Michael Landon Jr. claiming that this film plagiarizes their screenplay "Rise." The suit states, "The theme, set-up, opportunity, turning point, change of plans, complications, set back, final push, climax and aftermath of the 'Rise' screenplay and the 'God's Not Dead' motion picture are the same." Kullberg and Landon are looking for "an amount exceeding $100 million."
The film's title comes from a book of the same name by Dr. Rice Broocks, which focuses on the subject of apologetics (Greek "apologia" for an intellectual defense). Broocks is credited with having provided apologetics research on the film as well. The song performed by Newsboys was actually written by Daniel Bashta and originally titled "Like A Lion".
"Mark: You prayed and believed your whole life. Never done anything wrong. And here you are. You're the nicest person I know. I am the meanest. You have dementia. My life is perfect. Explain that to me! Mina's Mother: Sometimes the devil allows people to live a life free of trouble because he doesn't want them turning to God. Their sin is like a jail cell, except it is all nice and comfy and there doesn't seem to be any reason to leave. The door's wide open. Till one day, time runs out, and the cell door slams shut, and suddenly it's too late."
"Josh Wheaton: Only a real risk can test the reality of a belief."
