Writer, producer, and director Bert I. Gordon created some of the special effects of the large ants by shooting magnified images of the Panamanian bullet ant.
As a promotional gimmick for this film, theaters displayed ant farms in their lobbies, though they were not allowed anywhere near the concession counters.
Joan Collins disliked working with the ant props, claiming they bumped into and scratched the actors, including her.
This was the third Bert I. Gordon film to claim to be based on the works of H. G. Wells. In actuality, all three of the films had little or nothing to do with their source material. This was also the eighth Gordon film to deal with the subject of giant monsters.
The name of the the rental car agency owner is painted on the window as "J. Foote". James E. Foote worked on this movie as Transportation Captain.
"Coreen Bradford: Oh my God! They're herding us like cattle!"
"Velma Thompson: All we wanted was to enjoy what was left of our life. Is that bad?"
