Keri Russell was the first and only choice for the female lead.
J.K. Simmons was cast at very short notice for his key small role as Pollard. Not counting his briefly appearance at the ending (a few seconds, no more), Simmons time in the movie just lasts for 10 minutes.
This was originally pitched as a found footage film.
Not normally interested in genre films, Keri Russell was attracted to the project because of its depiction of a mother fighting for her family.
Scott Stewart wrote the screenplay in just 6 weeks.
