Biko Review

Biko is a Malay family drama that shows us the relationship between a father and his son in Malaysia. However, with a cliched rich-vs-poor narrative, this movie feels outdated in 2023. The film uses manipulative treatment without adding layers to its characters or providing any new insights. The father, Izwan, has a low-paying job with no job security and struggles to make ends meet, but he cares for his son with all his heart. They share a strong emotional connection despite living in a van because Izwan cannot afford to rent a house. Izwan keeps Biko away from some of life's bigger joys and even hides the identity of Biko's mother. The movie also includes the tired trope of 'a poor guy falls in love with a rich girl,' which leads to an inevitably doomed romance. The performances cannot save the film, with the supporting cast falling into the same pattern of thinking that loud acting equates to good. Overall, the film is forgettable and lacks subtlety.
