KV Anand revealed that Ilayathalapathy Vijay was his first choice for Anegan as he wrote the script with the actor in his mind. But unfortunately, due to his prior commitments for AR Murugadoss' Kaththi, Vijay had turned down the film. The cinematographer-turned director even mentioned that it was Vijay who had put forward Dhanush's name for the film. So that's how Dhanush landed himself into Anegan.
The shooting started on 2nd September in Puducherry.
In preparation for the role of Amyra Dastur. she was asked to see Tamil films. She also took Tamil lessons from Dhanush to get her dialogues right.
The one who plays villain's henchmen is actually the art director of the film, Kiran.
In the film, Aung San Suu Kyi is a classmate of Samudra (heroine's Rangoon character). There is a classroom scene in which the attendance is called out with Aung's name. In the "Present day" scene, the heroine (Madhumita) has a poster of Aung in her bedroom. In the closing credits Burma honeymoon trip scene, Aung's posters are seen in the background.
