Following the call recordings and AI-powered transcription features in India, Truecaller has launched a new AI Call Scanner feature to tackle AI voice scam calls in the US. As per the company, this new AI-based feature will help users by analysing incoming calls and flagging those suspected of being related to scams. Here are more details about the new Truecaller AI Call Scanner feature.

What is Truecaller AI Call Scanner?

Truecaller has introduced the new AI Call Scanner feature, which is designed to identify AI voices in real time during phone calls. This feature aims to detect AI voice scam calls by giving users a tool to recognise and avoid potential scams. The Truecaller AI Call Scanner works by analysing the voice patterns of incoming calls to determine if they are generated by AI.

It is worth noting that AI voice scams are on the rise, and scammers utilise AI-based technology to mimic human voices to scam people with money or any specific data. These scams came to light around 2019, when deepfake technology emerged, which has also increased the use of AI for fraudulent activities.

Recently, several reports stated that fraudsters take samples of voices from videos of different people on social media platforms and use AI to clone them. The scammers then use the AI-cloned voice by calling the person’s family members for money-related fraudulent activities.

Truecaller AI Call Scanner feature availability

In order to use the Truecaller AI Call Scanner feature, users must have Truecaller’s premium membership. Currently, it is available in the US for Android users. However, the feature is expected to come to other countries in the coming weeks or months. The availability of the feature in India is not known yet.

Truecaller AI Call Scanner: how to use it?

  • Those premium subscribers who want to use the new device must set the Truecaller app as their default calling app to access the new feature.
  • Once done, users can activate AI Detection if they feel a call might be from the scammers or are unsure about the caller’s identity.
  • The call is briefly put on hold when users tap “Start AI Detection” to let the AI analyze the voice.
  • During the analysis, an “Analyzing…” message is displayed, indicating that the AI is checking if the voice is human or computer-generated.
  • The AI Voice Detection feature provides immediate feedback during the call, as a message will appear, indicating either ‘Human Detected’ or ‘AI Voice Detected,’.
