Sony Introduces the PlayStation Portal for a portable PS5 gaming experience

Highlights
  • Sony has announced a new portable gaming device called the PlayStation Portal.
  • The system is designed around the PS Remote Play station.
  • The PlayStation Portal is priced at $199.99 (approx. Rs 16,500).

Sony will be dipping its toes in the portable gaming scene once again. The company has announced that it will be launching a new portable gaming system. Called PlayStation Portal, it was first unveiled as Project Q during the PlayStation Showcase event in May. The system is designed around the PS Remote Play service and gives PS5 owners the option to play their PS5 games anywhere as long as they are both connected to Wi-Fi. Sony notes that the PS Portal requires internet Wi-Fi with at least 5Mbps to use. However, it also recommends a high-speed connection of at least 15Mbps for a better experience.

It should be noted that the PS Portal is not a cloud-streaming device. So it is not compatible with PlayStation Plus Premium’s cloud streaming. It is also incompatible PS VR2 games which is pretty obvious.

Hardware

The PS Portal looks like a stretched-out DualSense Controller with a big touch screen in the middle. This screen measures 8-inches in size and is capable of 1080p resolution at 60fps. Further, the device also comes with all the bells and whistles of the standard DualSense controller. This includes features such as adaptive triggers and haptic feedback.

Other features include a USB Type-C port for charging. There is also a 3.5mm headset jack for audio. It should be noted that the device does not come with Bluetooth. So many wireless devices including the PS Pulse headset are incompatible. Instead, the PlayStation Portal uses Sony’s proprietary technology called PlayStation link. This will currently only be available with the PS Pulse Elite headset and the PS Pulse Explore earbuds. Both of which were also unveiled by Sony.

Price and availability

The PlayStation Portal is priced at $199.99 (approx. Rs 16,500). Meanwhile, the PS Pulse Elite headset and PS Pulse Explore earbuds are priced at $149.99 USD (approx. Rs 12,400) and $199.99 (approx. Rs 16,500) respectively. Pricing, availability and pre-order details will be revealed later.
