Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Flip4: Ushering in a new era for foldable smartphones

A handful of companies are offering foldable phones right now but Samsung has truly made this form factor mainstream. The fact that the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold ranges have successfully entered their fourth generation signifies that audiences all across the globe have embraced these foldable smartphones with open arms. Part of the credit for this also goes to the thoughtful upgrades that are being added to these phones every year. This year is no different. The Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Flip4 have both been equipped with meaningful upgrades that are all set to make them the most coveted foldable phones this season. Here’s why we think now is the right time to own a foldable.

Exquisite design – More efficient than ever

There is a reason why Samsung calls Galaxy Z Flip4 the phone that claps back. The unique sound that it makes when you flip it shut is quite pleasing and satisfying to the ears. And it’s perfect for those who crave compact smartphones but don’t want to let go of the convenience of a big screen either. Its folding nature still enables the amazing Flex Mode, which lets you exploit all the angles that the phone can sit at to click pictures from various perspectives. This means, there’s no need to carry a tripod or a gorilla pod wherever you go. For selfies, its tiny exterior display acts as a viewfinder, enabling you to capture your self-portraits with the main cameras rather than the front snapper.

Galaxy Z Fold4 also abides by the same principles as its predecessors yet brings new updates to augment the user experience. Its cover screen is still at its tall self at 6.2-inch, while the wide main screen offers a large 7.6-inch real estate, allowing you to go hands-free by simply setting it down and finding a good angle to enjoy the visuals. While earlier models used a metal sheet between the display and the digitizer to support the latter, in this model, the brand has removed the sheet and instead increased the durability of the digitizer with fibre-reinforced plastic. This means the overall weight of the phone comes down due to the change in design.

A selfie camera is indeed present but the fact that you can use its 50MP triple camera setup for serving your selfie needs makes things all the more exciting. The Galaxy Z Fold4 is also more compact, thinner and lighter than its predecessor, making it even easier to fit inside your pocket. While the first three generations of the Galaxy Z Fold were all made using a gear-based hinge design, this year, Samsung has gone for a new hinge design that brings in a rotational effect. This new design allows the hinge to be slimmer and lighter without interlocking components in place.

Additionally, the hinges and the frames of both these foldable phones are made from Armor Aluminum, giving them high levels of durability. The glass used is the latest Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+, while the displays are coated with an updated version of the Ultra Thin Glass that gives them even stronger protection. Another common feature they share between them is their IPX8 water resistance rating. Both these Samsung devices are absolutely killing it in the design department, which is not a surprise since their previous iterations impressed us with their looks as well.

Gorgeous new colours – Elegance in every shade

The Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Flip4 are both being offered in attractive new shades. You’ll be able to purchase the Galaxy Z Flip4 in Bora Purple, Graphite, and Pink Gold options. If you’re not already spoilt for choice, Samsung is also offering a Bespoke Edition of the Galaxy Z Flip4, which lets you give a one-of-a-kind spin to it using a custom colour combo. It’s a great feature for those who like to personalise their gadgets. There are new colours in the Galaxy Z Fold4’s repertoire as well. The familiar Phantom Black hasn’t gone away but we get new options in the form of Graygreen, and Beige. This range has something for everyone.

Long-lasting batteries – Spend less time charging, more time doing things

Despite its slightly reduced dimensions, the Galaxy Z Flip4 manages to cram a bigger battery inside it compared to its predecessor. Instead of a 3,300mAh unit, there’s a 3,700mAh battery powering the handset, which will likely allow users to extract more than a day’s worth of usage. Additionally, the phone offers a faster 25W Super Fast Charging this time around. The Galaxy Z Fold4 adopts a 4,400mAh battery but it does see an upgrade in its wireless charging speed. Although its 25W Super Fast Charging remains unchanged, its wireless charging speed has been bumped up to 15W from 10W on its predecessor.

Strong privacy – Knox, Knox who is there? Doesn’t matter.

Both these smartphones have been blessed with the Samsung Knox multi-layer security suite that’s built not just into the software but also into the hardware. This advanced mobile security solution protects apps and data by strictly defining what each process is allowed to do and which data it can access, while also offering data encryption. One more layer of security is delivered by the side-mounted fingerprint scanners onboard these devices. Unlocking the phone means holding it in your hand in the manner you usually hold it, making the fingerprint scanner naturally line up with your thumb.

Other highlights

120Hz Dynamic AMOLED 2X displays make their way into both the phones in all their HDR10+ glory. This applies to both the panels onboard the Galaxy Z Fold4. Apart from gorgeous visuals, you can also expect breathtaking performance thanks to their adoption of the 4nm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor. And while the Galaxy Z Flip4 has 8GB of RAM as standard, each model of the Galaxy Z Fold4 has 12GB of RAM.

And then there are the cameras. The Galaxy Z Flip4 features a bigger 12MP main sensor compared to its predecessor and still offers an f/1.8 aperture along with OIS. The other camera on the back is the 12MP ultra-wide snapper, while the front camera gets a 10MP sensor. As for the Galaxy Z Fold4, it gets a higher resolution main sensor as well as a better telephoto camera. Instead of a 12MP main sensor, you get a 50MP unit with an f/1.8 opening and OIS. The telephoto camera is a 10MP sensor offering 3x optical zoom and 30x Space Zoom.
