Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5: design

Samsung didn’t give the latest gen clamshell foldable a design overhaul. The design of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 is largely the same as its predecessor. From the dimensions and weight to the cover display, everything is akin to last year’s model.

However, the Flip 6 has an IP48 rating, offering better protection against dust and water splashes than its predecessor’s IPX8 protection. Besides this, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 is the first clamshell foldable to come with a vapour chamber for cooling, keeping thermals in check during heavy usage.

You still get a folder-like cover display with cutouts for dual cameras and a flash. The camera lenses are well protected by rings from scratching. Once fully unfolded, it offers a large screen estate with a cutout for the front camera at the top centre of the display.

The display department also didn’t receive any upgrades this year. It still features the same display specifications for both main and cover screens as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5.

During our time with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, we found its cover panel to be a decent upgrade. It had a much better and bigger display than the previous-gen Samsung Galaxy Flip devices. The size of the cover screen is perfect for quickly checking important notifications.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5

The same goes for the main display. It is the same as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5. You can still place the phone half open and use it in a dual-screen setup.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5: performance

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 offers superior performance and efficiency due to its newer Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC and 12GB RAM than the Flip 5’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC and 8 RAM, making it a capable device.

While we’re yet to test the performance of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6, we already know what to expect from the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC’s performance, thanks to benchmark scores. The chipset received a total score of over 2 million points on AnTuTu compared to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC’s 1.6 million score.

Thus, you can expect a respectable performance boost with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 over its predecessor.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5: cameras

The company has upgraded the rear camera setup with a better primary shooter on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6. It now comes with a 50MP primary lens compared to the 12MP main camera of the Flip 5. However, you still get the same 12MP ultrawide lens that you get with the Flip 5. Moreover, the front camera of the Flip 6 is still the same 10MP snapper as the Flip 5’s.

Besides the main sensor, there isn’t any upgrade in the camera department on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6. We were pretty impressed with the camera quality of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5. Moreover, you can also use the primary camera for selfies through the cover screen.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5: battery and charging

Samsung has also upgraded the battery capacity with the Galaxy Z Flip 6. It now offers a bigger (4,000mAh) battery than its predecessor’s 3,700mAh cell. With Flip 5, we got a screen time between 4 to 4.5 hours. It offers a full-day battery life with regular usage at best. With a bigger battery capacity under the hood, the Flip 6 will likely provide a better battery backup than its predecessor.

However, it still only supports 25W charging, the same as the Flip 5. It takes roughly 90 minutes to fully charge the Flip 5, and you can expect the same from the Flip 6, which is rather slow for a premium phone of 2024.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5: software

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 runs on the latest Android 14-based OneUI OS out of the box. Both devices will get four years of Android releases and five years of security updates. However, the Flip 5 ships with Android 13 and will only get OS updates until Android 17, while the Flip 6 will get OS releases until Android 18.

In addition to more Android releases, the Flip 6 also offers Samsung AI features that it introduced with the Galaxy S24 series. Moreover, the company will offer these AI features for free until 2025. Here are the Samsung AI features that you get with the Flip 6:

  • Circle to search: Simply long-press the home button or menu bar, then circle the object onscreen to search for it online.
  • Live translate: It provides real-time voice language translation during calls.
  • Photo assist: Similar to Google’s Magic Editor, the Galaxy AI’s photo assist allows you to modify or delete things from a photograph.

Conclusion

Besides a few upgrades in the hardware specifications, the latest clamshell foldable phone also brings AI features over its predecessor. You get a better main camera, a more powerful SoC at the helm, and a bigger battery capacity with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 than the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5. If these improvements are important to you, consider upgrading to the Samsung Galaxy Flip 6.
