Samsung Galaxy S25 could feature DLSS-like AI upscaling for games with Snapdragon 8 Gen 4

Highlights
  • Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 could support AI frame interpolation for games.
  • This could benefit mobile gaming in more than one way. Some of its potential benefits are mentioned here.
  • A tipster claims the AI upscaling feature could allow Genshin Impact at 1080p 120 FPS.

The Samsung Galaxy S25 is expected to feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC, at least in some markets. Leaks and rumours so far suggest significantly faster performance from the chip. However, this latest bit of information is particularly promising for gaming on the S25, as the underlying Snapdragon chip is said to support DLSS-like AI image upscaling for games. Here’s what that means:

Samsung Galaxy S25 AI upscaling feature

Per tipster DigitalChatStation (DCS), the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC features “GPU interpolation technology”. If the game’s graphics aren’t up to the mark, AI will make it clearer or sharper by adding details that it thinks should be there.

The tipster claims the chip can run Genshin Impact at 1080p resolution and 120 FPS frame rate. That’s a notable jump from 60 FPS Genshin Impact graphics on the Galaxy S24’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in the max settings. AI upscaling makes game graphics look smoother.

The graphics upscaling (along with powerful processors) could also open doors for AAA PC/console-level games, like what we have on the iPhone 15 Pro. The iPhone can run titles like Resident Evil 4 remake and Assassin’s Creed: Mirage thanks to the A17 Pro’s hexa-core GPU. This could elevate the prospects of mobile e-sports gaming.

DCS adds that the AI upscaling feature will come to the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor through a firmware update. That means those chips already support the tech on the hardware side. In other words, the Galaxy S24 series and other devices with these chips could also get the feature.

However, the AI frame interpolation feature can have some downsides too:

  • The AI model may not be compatible with all games. Not all game developers will allow this for copyright reasons.
  • So, generative AI may cause artefacts by wrongly creating new frames or details.
  • The inconsistencies and issues created by it may take time to fix.
  • AI processing can result in input lags or performance impact.
Let’s see how Qualcomm and its partners like Samsung handle these potential problems. It’d be interesting times for mobile gamers nevertheless.
