At the same stage, OPPO also announced it will integrate AI into its smartphones by the end of 2024 across various price segments. To this extent, the company also teamed up with giants like Microsoft, Google, and MediaTek for generative AI or GenAI features.
The brand says that it aims to bring advanced AI capabilities to improve user experiences in image processing, smart charging, and natural language processing. OPPO has filed over 5,399 AI patents globally, including 3,796 patents in image processing.
OPPO established an AI Centre in Shenzhen in February 2024 and this helped the company to centralise resources and support the development of AI features like image processing, computer vision, speech technology, machine learning, natural language, and computer vision. The company clarified that it will not use user data used for training AI models and has robust security and privacy measures in place.
OPPO flagship phones will be equipped with Google Gemini LLMs, including an AI Toolbox with an AI Writer and an AI Recording Summary. OPPO aims to improve voice and text conversion through Microsoft's Fast Transcription and Neural TTS technologies. The collaboration with MediaTek is for chipsets with dedicated AI processing units (NPUs) and accelerators.
IDC report says that flagships with dedicated AI features in the sub $1,000 segment will grow over 250 percent in 2024 and the total shipment will be around 35 million units.
