New Galaxy Ring with display patented by Samsung: could it be the Galaxy Ring 2?

Highlights
  • A new Samsung Galaxy Ring has received US patent approval.
  • The new version that appeared in the patents shows a squarish outer layer and a circular inner later with all the required sensors.
  • The newer Samsung Galaxy Ring might feature a display on the outer layer.

The first Samsung Galaxy Ring is set to launch at the Galaxy Unpacked event on July 10th in Paris. While we wait for the announcement, 91mobiles has exclusively spotted the patent application of what looks like a Samsung smart ring filed at the United States Patent Application Publication back in May 2024. This reveals some key details and design. We speculate this could be a potential successor and might probably be dubbed the Galaxy Ring 2.

New Samsung Galaxy Ring will get a display?

  • The Samsung Galaxy Ring teasers show a full-circular ring design with required sensors placed within the inner layer.
  • However, the new version that appeared in the patents shows a squarish outer layer and a circular inner later with all the required sensors.
  • The ring also appears to be slightly elongated and is not a single-circular ring-like design.
  • There might be two display units on the Galaxy Ring. If we click on an icon on the first display, the content/information is presented on the second screen.
  • Both these screens will function mutually based on the input.
  • The display unit will probably come in handy to interact and view stats of workouts, heartbeat rate, check notifications, call alerts, etc.
  • This will be a new addition to the successor and knowing Samsung, this could be an AMOLED panel.
  • The patent images show the Galaxy Ring will have support for Galvanic Skin Response (GSR), SPO2, PPG, an ECG measurement and there will be a temperature sensor, acceleration sensor, fingerprint sensor, and a switch.
  • Connectivity options could include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Zigbee technologies, NFC and MST (magnetic secure transmission) for payments.

The patent documents say there will be multiple ring sizes considering this is a smart ring and the user finger sizes will vastly vary. There will be 27 ring sizes in South Korea and 65 sizes in the US. When the wearable device is divided into several sizes, the design is also changed accordingly and this will also increase the price accordingly.

Since the Samsung Galaxy Ring has just received a patent listing, there’s no way to tell if this will ever become a reality. This is considering the inclusion of a display unit, which is a big deal to make it functional on a smaller ring-like area. There are also chances that this might just remain a potential design idea like the Samsung OLED headset, Smart Speaker with an OLED screen, Cling Band with OLED and others, which were showcased at the MWC 2024.

The Samsung Galaxy Ring is expected to debut on July 10th. The APK teardown of the Samsung Health app has revealed some features, including stress monitoring-which can check Electrodermal Activity, skin temperature, heart rate variability and activity levels, heart rate tracking-which can check the pulse in the finger area, Snore Detection-which can detect snoring while sleeping but this requires the phone to be nearby, and Period Monitoring-which uses skin temperature analysis.
