iPhone 15 USB-C speeds could be similar to the current Lightning Port: Report

Highlights
  • Apple could reserve a high-bandwidth USB-C port for the iPhone 15 Pro models.
  • The vanilla iPhone 15 variant could sport a slower USB standard.
  • The iPhone 15 series launch date is reumoured to be September 12th.

One of the crowd-pulling features for the iPhone 15 lineup would be the long-rumoured USB-C port as Apple seems to have succumbed to regulatory pressures. While USB-C ports bring with them the advantage of universal adaptability and higher data transfer and fast charging speeds, the base models of the iPhone 15 series may not reap the benefits.

A recent by report Apple researcher Majin Bu suggests the company will limit the iPhone 15 USB-C to USB 2.0 speeds. In other words, the USB-C port on the iPhone 15 could be similar to the prevailing Lightning Port. Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 Pro models could get the super-fast Thunderbolt USB-C Port, with speeds up to a massive 40Gbps, as suggested by an earlier leak.

iPhone 15 USB-C specifications (rumoured)

As per the new report, the iPhone 15 will sport a 1.6m long USB-C cable, with USB 2.0 20V3A port. So, on one hand, it could have the same bandwidth and speeds as the current-gen Lightning Port. However, he claims it to be longer than the 1-meter Lightning cable and stronger too.

Also, the USB-C cable for iPhone 15 isn’t MFI-certified. For the unversed, MFI stands for Made For iPhone accessories that Apple approves to be compatible with iPhones. So, will this mean any USB-C (2.0) cable will work with the iPhone 15? Well, it is too early to tell and we suggest you take these rumours and claims with a grain of salt.

Additionally, there is also talk about Apple coming out with quirky matching Type-C cables to complement each of the iPhone 15 hues. While that certainly wouldn’t make up for the lack of speed for data transfer (considering that is true), that’s an aesthetic many may catch on.

Mr Bu’s claims don’t end here though. He reaffirms the previously rumoured Thunderbolt support will probably be exclusive to the Pro models.

This Thunderbolt USB-C cable is said to be of USB 4 Gen 2 standard with 4K 60Hz output support, 150W power delivery speed, and only 0.7m in length.

Again, we will know for sure about these claims once Apple confirms them. The iPhone 15 event is expected on September 12th and besides a USB-C port, we also expect a multi-functioning Action Button, titanium body, quicker charging support, and improved cameras and performance.
