iPhone 16 Pro models to feature stacked camera design for better image quality, says analyst Ming-Chi Kuo

• According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is planning to adopt a stacked CIS design for the iPhone 16 Pro models. With the CIS image sensor, larger and more sensors can be stacked on top of each other resulting in better image quality.
• Kuo adds that Apple has managed to secure orders from Sony, which means the latter won’t be able to deliver quantities to other OEMs. This will benefit Sony’s rival supplier Will Semi as it could lead to more orders for CIS image sensors from Chinese smartphone brands.
• The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are also expected to feature a stacked CMOS image sensor design for the 48MP rear camera. But due to the limited availability of the image sensor, Apple is reportedly not adopting it for all the iPhone 15 models. 

iPhone 16 series: what we know so far

The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models are also expected to feature periscope telephoto lenses along with upgraded telephoto and ultra-wide camera lenses. The periscope lens on the iPhone 16 Pro Max is tipped to be an “Ultra or Super Telephoto lens” with 6X optical zoom. It’s a 7-piece lens system that is powered by a “super outsole” 1/1.14-inch image sensor by Sony.

Other than that, the base iPhone 16 model is said to feature vertically aligned cameras like the iPhone 12 instead of the diagonal design currently used. There’s still a long time to for the iPhone 16 series so as much as upgrades are expected there are likely going to be a lot of changes as well. But all reports point to a major camera upgrade for the iPhone 16 series.
