Apple is having its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 event today. Among other things, it will announce the new iPhone software called iOS 18. And hours ahead of the event, some of those iOS 18 features have been disclosed. So as it’s already been expected, AI (Artificial Intelligence) will be front and center of iOS and many of Apple’s other platform updates. Well, Apple being Apple could call iOS 18’s AI features Apple Intelligence.

Apple Intelligence
- This scoop comes from Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman who expects AI to “account for about half of Apple’s WWDC keynote presentation”.
- He expects AI will be baked into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15.
- As per Gurman, Apple aims to use AI to aid the everyday lives of regular users.
- Also, Apple Intelligence could be opt-in, giving users the option to avail it only if they want.
- Because of the processing demand, Apple could limit AI features to select iPhones (iPhone 15 Pro series and newer models) and Macs (the ones with M1 chipset or later).
- Apple Intelligence could include both Apple’s own AI model and OpenAI’s GPT model. Similarly, some of that would be on-device while the other processing could be sent to the cloud. The new operating systems would be smart to identify which tasks need cloud-based computing.
- Gurman thinks Apple will emphasise the benefits of on-device processing and the security measures taken to protect user data. The company may highlight how it doesn’t profile users based on this data.
- One of the key Apple Intelligence features could be Summarisation for content on the web (Safari), text messages, notes and emails. There could also be a neat feature that gives its users a brief of the missed call. We are not sure how this would work.
- AI could also be used to generate email and message responses.
- Siri could get a new life thanks to AI. Apple could allow Siri more control over apps, enabling it to perform actions like summarising an article, editing a photo or deleting an email. Apple could expand Siri’s new abilities to 3rd party apps but Gurman expects this to take time till 2025.
- An AI feature on iOS that could become a fan favourite could be the so-called AI-created emoji. iOS will be able to create an emoji based on your prompt.
- Voice memos could get an auto-transcription feature for voice recordings.
- The Photos app could get an AI-powered object eraser and enhancement features.
- The Mail app could feature automatic categorisation of emails in the inbox.
- Finally, for developers, Xcode could get AI-aided code completion functionality like GitHub Copilot.

- iOS 18 home screen will let you drop icons anywhere and they don’t have to be in a grid.
- There is a rumour that users could colour different app icons. So, you could colour-code different categories of apps. MacRumors adds that in iOS 18, dark mode could tint the apps on the home screen too.
- Control Center shortcuts could be rearranged, perhaps even on multiple pages. The Control Center could also accommodate a new music widget and a new UI for smart home apps.
- The Settings app across Apple software could be revamped for improved navigation, organisation and reliable search.
