Here’s how Huawei’s future flip foldables could look

Highlights
  • Huawei has patented a series of designs for its flip-folding phones.
  • It’s different from other flip phones as Huawei opts for a unique cover display.
  • Huawei’s latest flip phone is the Pocket 2 with two large circular rings on the outside.

Huawei might not be available in India anymore but the brand is still very much active. Even in the foldable market, Huawei has been launching new phones and even introduced the first clamshell-folding phone with four external cameras. It’s the Huawei Pocket 2 and this foldable debuted earlier in February this year. Now, some designs patented by Huawei give us an idea on how its future flip phones from the Chinese brand could look like.

Future flip foldables from Huawei

Huawei has patented a few designs for its future foldable phones. This was spotted by 91mobiles on the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA). Since these are patents, it doesn’t ensure a confirmation that Huawei will use these designs. But we can expect a similar design from these patents.

According to the patents, there are five designs for a clamshell-folding design. Overall, the foldable design is the same but it’s the camera placement that’s different for each model. At present, the Huawei Pocket 2 has four cameras clubbed into a single module. It has another ring just below that houses the cover display.

In the latest patents, there’s one design with two circular rings on the exterior of the phone with one bigger than the other. The two rings are placed diagonally. We can assume that the bigger ring will house the cover display, while the smaller one features the cameras. Another patent is similar to the Huawei Pocket 2 except that the circular rings are placed horizontally and not vertically. The circular rings are of the same size.

Huawei is also experimenting with square-shaped camera modules for its flip phones. Similar to the circular rings, one patent shows a bigger square and a smaller one placed vertically.

There’s another one placed diagonally and another placed horizontally. These are the same designs except that Huawei switched from a circular to a square shape.

The message is clear though with Huawei continuing to experiment with a similar design pattern with its future flip foldables. It’s interesting though as other brands like Samsung and Motorola are moving towards a bigger cover display so it’s more convenient for users to get things done without having to unfold their phone every time. But as mentioned above, these are only patents and the final designs are always subject to change.
