5 best laptops showcased at Computex 2024

The recently-concluded Computex expo in Taiwan once again set the stage for the latest advancements in computing technology. While we didn’t see as many laptops as we were hoping to, there was a lot to talk about regarding new CPUs from Intel and AMD. While Team Blue is getting ready to launch its Lunar Lake platform later this year, AMD also jumped in and announced its new Ryzen AI 300 chipsets which will be launching on new devices starting next month.

Not to forget, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X silicon is also making waves and the first wave of products start hitting shelves this month including the new Surface lineup from Microsoft. 

Here is a look at some of the best laptops showcased at Computex 2024:

ASUS TUF A14

The TUF lineup from ASUS has always been an affordable option for consumers even though they have been bulky and not very pleasant to look at. This year the company is adding the TUF A14, a new addition in the form of a 14-inch gaming laptop which has been completely revamped. After seeing the laptop in person, it sure seems that ASUS is pulling up its game.

While most of the laptop continues to feature a plastic chassis, the top and bottom covers are now reinforced with metal. It is also quite sleek, having a thickness of just 0.78-inches and weighing 1.45kgs, essentially making it a solid alternative to the popular ROG Zephyrus G14.

The laptop is powered by AMD’s Ryzen 7 8845HS processor with the option of an Nvidia RTX 4050 or 4060 GPU with up to 110W maximum TGP. ASUS also confirmed that eventually it will offer the A14 with the newly announced “Strix Point” Ryzen AI HX 370 processor. In terms of memory and storage you get 16GB of LPDDRX5 RAM and two M.2 storage slots, supporting 2TB PCIe Gen 4 SSDs each. The 14-inch IPS display will offer a 16:10 aspect ratio, QHD+ resolution, 165Hz refresh rate, 3ms response time, 100% sRGB coverage, and 400 nits of peak brightness. For I/O there’s a USB 4 Type-C port that supports DisplayPort 2.1 and Power Delivery 3.0, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port, HDMI 2.1, a 3.5mm audio combo jack, and a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port.

Pricing is slightly on the steep side, with ASUS listing the new TUF A14 for $1,399 (Rs 1,17,000 approx). ASUS also launched the new TUF A16 2024 featuring similar specifications and updated design language as the A14.

MSI Stealth A16 AI+

MSI had some new laptops to announce at this year’s Computex powered by new Intel Lunar Lake and AMD Ryzen AI 300 chips. While all upcoming Intel-based laptops were showcased with limited information, the new Stealth A16 AI+ looks like a promising device which unsurprisingly tries to bridge act as a bridge between gamers and creative pros. An update for the original Stealth 16 Studio from 2023, the new model is powered by the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 processor, meaning that it now comes with support for Copilot+ alongside a redesigned chassis.

While it still has MSI’s deep black aesthetics, there are some nifty updates. It offers a thickness of 19.9mm and weighs 2.1kg which makes it fairly portable for a 16-inch notebook. It features an aluminium shell, a per-key RGB keyboard and large trackpad.  aluminum shell opens up to reveal a per-key RGB keyboard, a spacious touchpad. The display is a offers a 16:10 aspect ratio with a QHD+ resolution, 240Hz refresh rate and up to 100 percent DCI-P3 colour space.

The new Stealth A16 AI+ will be offered with up to an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 mobile GPU, 32GB LPDDR5x memory and 2TB PCIe Gen 4 SSD. It will also come with a massive 99.9Whr battery, which should offer enough juice for long productivity hours. For I/O, there’s a USB 4 Type-C port with power delivery, two USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A port, HDMI 2.1, a 2.5-Gigabit ethernet, and a 3.5mm audio jack. The laptop even supports the latest Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 wireless protocols. Other notable features include a powerful speaker setup, massive ventilation at the bottom, five heat pipes for efficient cooling, and a chrome accent behind the lid with the Stealth branding.

ASUS ProArt P16

For those who loved the 2024 ROG Zephyrus G16, ASUS is now offering a special version targeting creators. The new ProArt P16 features the same design and chassis but with some minor changes. The keyboard ditches the four programmable keys at top, and comes with the DialPad, a digital dial built into the trackpad. The dial has been a prominent feature on previous ProArt series laptops where they included a physical dial, but for newer models ASUS went for a more simple and practical approach.

The notebook also comes with an upgraded 16-inch OLED screen which now offers 4K resolution with support for 100 percent DCI-P3 color gamut coverage and 500 nits of peak brightness. ASUS will be offering the new ProArt P16 with an AMD Ryzen AI 9 370 with 12 cores, up to 64GB of LPDDR5X memory, and up to two 2TB M.2 SSDs.

Connectivity is very similar to the Zephyrus G16 including a USB 4.0 Type-C port, a USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C port, two USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A ports, an HDMI 2.1 port, a 3.5mm audio combo jack, and an SD card reader. Wireless options include Bluetooth 5.4 and Wi-Fi 7. The laptop will come bundled with a three-month Adobe Creative Suite subscription and a six-month CapCut Pro license. Pricing starts at $2,700 (Rs 2,26,000 approx).

ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 (AMD)

The ROG Zephyrus G16 is one of the best portable 16-inch laptops on the market, and ASUS is launching a new variant. The company announced at Computex that it will be an AMD version powered by the latest 12-core AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 processor, along with rest of the features similar to the Intel Core Ultra version.

Essentially you are getting the same gorgeous 16-inch OLED display with a 2.5K resolution, a 240Hz refresh rate, DisplayHDR and True Black 500 alongside the option of an IPS panel as well. For graphics you can go up to an Nvidia RTX 4070 GPU while memory and storage options include up to 32GB of LPDDR5X RAM with a 2TB PCIe Gen 4 SSD.

I/O options include a USB 4 Type-C port, a USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C port, two USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A ports, an HDMI 2.1 port, a 3.5mm audio jack, and an SD card reader. While the original model came with a dedicated NPU embedded within the Intel Core Ultra mobile processors, the new model will support Copilot out of the box. Pricing and availability wll be announced later and the laptop will be offered in same colour options as before, including Eclipse Gray and Platinum White.

MSI Stealth 18 Mercedes-AMG Motorsport

Continuing its partnership with Mercedes-AMG, MSI showcased a larger 18-inch version of the Stealth 16 Mercedes-AMG Motorsport from last year. The laptop impresses with its luxurious racing-inspired design with carbon fiber accents all around and features a sleek magnesium alloy build, along with high-end audio quality adding to its appeal. MSI said that the laptop will be available with an 18-inch 4K mini-LED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, or consumers can even go for an OLED panel, thus making it a standout choice for gaming enthusiasts and creative professionals.

It will be offered with a powerful combination of an Intel Core Ultra 9 185H CPU and Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 GPU, alongside a whopping 96GB of configurable RAM. Additionally the laptop comes with a special vapor chamber cooling solution with improved InfraFlow fans to cool the CPU and GPU.

The laptop will be available with up to 4TB of PCIe Gen 4 SSD storage, and a healthy set of connectivity including  two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports, a Thunderbolt 4 Type-C port, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port, HDMI 2.1, a 3.5mm audio combo jack, a micro-SD card reader along with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 wireless connectivity. Like most of MSI’s high-end laptops this one will also feature a large 99.9Whr battery. Pricing starts at $3,899 (Rs 3,27,000 approx) while availability will be shared at a later period.
