Elizabeth Wood based this film on journal entries about her own life experiences during her adolescence.
The title "White Girl" not only refers to the film's protagonist but is also a slang word for cocaine (the primary drug consumed in the film).
When asked what she thought of critics of the film who find it salacious and shocking, Morgan Saylor said "I find it really weird that sexuality is still so taboo in films and violence isn't. It really bewilders me. Gun violence is almost promoted onscreen in these huge blockbusters and then sex is still so shocking. But I also can understand that people find it uncomfortable, which I think is cool. We've been asked, 'Why do you show this if you know it's going to make the audience uncomfortable?' and I think it's about how it's kind of real. It's an honest portrayal of sex, in some way."
Justin Bartha wore a prosthetic penis for his scene.
The film is loosely based on Wood's life.
"Leah: Yo. I was wondering if you guys know where I can get some weed or anything? [Blue whistles] Blue: You think we're some drug dealers or something man? Leah: Uh... no? I just thought you guys maybe know were the hook is... Blue: Nah, for real shorty... You can't be coming straight and ask strangers like that. Aright? Leah: Are you serious? Blue: Do I look serious? [Leah walks away, Blue lights up a joint] Blue: Hey shorty! [Leah turns] Blue: Don't do drugs, aright?"
"Blue: Hello. Leah: Hi. Blue: What's your name? Leah: Leah. Blue: I'm Blue. Leah: That's your real name? Blue: Maybe. Leah: Why do they call you that? Blue: 'Cause I'm always sad. [pause] Blue: Before I met you."
