TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

The film is based on the acclaimed novel by Shirley Jackson.

The village below Blackwood House is called Shirleyville in homage to Shirley Jackson, author of the book upon which the film is based.

Unhappy with previous adaptations of Shirley Jackson's work (including the critically panned 1999 film The Haunting (1999)), Jackson's eldest son Laurence Hyman worked closely with the production to insure the film kept to the book's spirit.

This was a passion project for screenwriter Mark Kruger, who initially began adapting the story into a screenplay in 2005.

The film did not present the villagers contrition as much as the novel. After the fire, a constant stream of shamed citizens began to leave offerings at the Blackwood door over the years, establishing a new town tradition.

Popular Dialogues

"[talking to Merricat] Charles Blackwood: Now that's a handsome cat. What's his name?"

"Merricat Blackwood: [about the chanting crowd outside their burning house] The sound of their hate is another kind of fire moving through the bones of our house."
