IMDbOn September 19, 1988, during filming in Toledo, Spain, Roy Kinnear fell from his horse, sustaining a broken pelvis. He died from a heart attack the next day at a Madrid hospital. Director Richard Lester subsequently quit his career as a movie director and only worked sporadically thereafter.
Roy Kinnear's final role was completed by a double and a British actor who was a sound-a-like for him.
Sir Christopher Lee said they seriously considered abandoning this movie after Roy Kinnear died. Lee said it would have been no loss to the world if they had never finished the movie.
Contrary to his role as an antagonist in this movie, in the book, Rochefort had become a close friend of d'Artagnan. They only come at odds in the book because d'Artagnan is a Cardinalist and Rochefort a Frondeur, who helps the Duke of Beaufort escape from prison (as shown in this movie) and eventually takes up arms against Cardinal Mazarin in the book, in which action, he is accidentally killed by d'Artagnan.
Oliver Reed needed doubles for the fight scenes, as he was considerably overweight and suffered from gout and kidney problems. Reed had been seriously ill in December 1987.
"Cardinal Mazarin: The people of England will permit anything - except cruelty to horses and a rise in the price of beer."
"Justine de Winter: King Charles' death is inevitable, and France must not interfere. General Cromwell insists. Cardinal Mazarin: Roundhead diplomacy. Does he think he can cut off a crowned head, even an English one, and royal France will stand by doing nothing? Justine de Winter: What will France do? Cardinal Mazarin: Stand by... protesting."
