Simon (Sir Patrick Stewart) re-enacts a scene with Virginia from Hamlet where the title character is speaking with his father's ghost, who reveals he was slain by his own brother Claudius. Sir Patrick Stewart played Claudius in Hamlet, Prince of Denmark (1980), and Hamlet (2009).
When the film was initially released in Japan, they retired it to "Ghost Scream" to capitalize on Neve Campbell's popularity of the movie Scream (1996), which came out some months after the movie was released. This change was reverted for the Japanese DVD release.
"Virginia 'Ginny' Otis: When a gentle girl can win a prayer from out the lips of sin/when a child gives up tears and the barren almond bears/when the silent chapel bell sounds the ghostly sinners knell/then shall all the house be still, and peace shall come to Canterville."
"Sir Simon de Canterville: Hail, and well met Sir Ghost."
