IMDbJames Baxter, who is known for many animation scenes that include complex parts like the Beauty and the Beast ballroom scene, animated the fusion scene of Steven and his Gem.
Steven fuses with Pearl (Rainbow Quartz 2.0) and Garnet (Sunstone) for the first time.
The comeback Steven tells White Diamond at the climax of the episode, "...What's your excuse?", was also a pivotal moment in the original pilot of the show. The episode had the same voice actors, but the animation style was very different. In the pilot, Steven obtains a time traveling hourglass that takes him back in time whenever he thinks of a better comeback he originally didn't say. Garnet (with knowledge from her future vision) purposefully asks Steven "Why are such a buttface?" right before the episodes climactic battle. So that when all hope seems lost, he can recall a better comeback he originally didn't have. Which ended up being "I can't help it. What's your excuse?".
All four Crystal Gems fuse for the first time ever to form Obsidian, the second fusion ever to be voiced by a male actor (Dee Bradley Baker; though, admittedly, it's just grunts and groans). Rainbow Quartz 2.0 is voiced by Alastair James, and Emerald is voiced by a nonbinary male.
The series finale of "Steven Universe". JK
"White Diamond: You are acting like a child! Steven Universe: I am a child. What's your excuse?"
"Peridot: Unbelievable! Sunstone: Oh, you better believe it. Peridot: Okay!"
