Shershaah is a fascinating and inspiring take on one of the most iconic events in recent Indian history. The movie is a  successful recreation of a crucial chapter of the Kargil war. Starting from a detailed history of his childhood, the movie captures every stage of the captain’s life as he grows up, finds love, and finally gets posted as a lieutenant. The impactful tone of patriotism is accentuated by the roles played by Siddharth Malhotra and Shiv Pandit. It can also be said that the director did a good job in trying to capture all the key features of the Kargil war within the span of the movie.

    Why should you watch Shershaah?
The Kargil war is one of the most significant events in the history of the Indian army and even the country as a whole. Fought at an alarmingly high altitude of 17,000 feet, this was a war that could not be forgotten. With the disguised Pakistani troops terrorizing India by its infiltration at the Line of COntrol, the minor riots progress eventually into a full-on war, which altered the lives of many soldiers and captains who went on to serve the nation at the border.

One such official who was posted at the said border was captain Vikram Batra. Instead of just fast-forwarding to the part where he gets knee-deep into the war, the director took the additional step of including a detailed view of his past and personal life. Though the romance and soundtrack were enjoyable, there were times when it felt like an unnecessary diversion from the serious issue at hand. Many viewers also felt that it made the movie deviate from its roots a little bit. These details make the first half relatively slow when compared to the latter, which is packed with information and back-to-back events of the war.

The casting of the movie is also worth a special mention. The roles of captain Sanjeev Jamwal, Ajay Singh Jasrotia, and Col are also greatly carried along in the movie by the actors Shiv Pandit, Nikitin Dheer, and Shataf Figar, with no disparity in their characters. However, the movie did contain a few stereotypical cliches, especially directed toward the Pakistanis. This is something that could have been avoided.

In the end, the basic structure and storyline of the movie, along with its expert execution of combat scenes and patriotism, make the movie worthy of a positive review irrespective of its tiny flaws. The combat scenes are definitely worth your attention and are something that has to be experienced on the grand screen of the cinema.

    Trivia Alert

    • The female lead Amruta Khanwilkar physically transformed herself for the role to look like a seasoned Tamasha dancer.
    • The background score and the film’s album are delivered by renowned composers Ajay-Atul.

TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

This isn't the first time that Captain Vikram Batra has been portrayed in a movie. He appeared in 2003 film L.O.C. Kargil as well and was portrayed by Abhishek Bachchan. Abhishek Bachchan however was not signed because he was too old to return to the role, considering he was 24 years old during the war. Hence, Sidharth Malhotra was chosen by the Batra family.

Film was earlier titled Yeh Dil Maange More.

In the high and difficult terrains of Kargil, actual Indian Army Soldiers help the crew to shoot the Film.

The film begins in mid 90s in the song Raataan Lambiyan Siddarth Malhotra and Kiara Advani go to watch Dilwale Dhulaniya Le Jaahenge 1995.This scene was shot at Maratha Mandir cinema hall in Mumbai which is running the film since 1995.

During an interview Dimple Cheema described Captain Batra as a person so full of energy that he would refuse to sit idle. In restaurants, he would start tapping the table and when told not to, he would start tapping his feet instead. In the movie, during a scene where Siddharth is served kahwah he could be seen mimicking a similar tapping with his legs.

Popular Dialogues

"Capt. Vikram Batra: If You're a Fauji Then You Live by Chance, Love by Choice, and Fight by Profession."

"Vishal Batra: There is no other status greater than the status of a soldier... There is no greater glory than the glory of the uniform... And there is no religion greater than our country."
