TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

Sydney Pollack initially turned down the chance to direct the remake, thinking the material too dated to work effectively in 1995. Once he agreed to take it on, Pollack made sure he had the approval of the original's director, Billy Wilder.

The lead role was originally offered to Winona Ryder. She turned down the role because she felt she could not fill the shoes of Audrey Hepburn.

The poem about Sabrina the water sprite is actually an excerpt from a masque called Comus, by John Milton. In turn, Sabrina (in the Milton poem) is based on a Welsh tale about a princess named Sabrina who was thrown in a river that is the boundary between Wales and England. The water deity Nereus took pity on Sabrina and turned her into a river goddess.

Harrison Ford is 22 years older than co-star Julia Ormond, which is not as great an age difference as the leads in the original, (Sabrina (1954)), where Humphrey Bogart was 29 years older than co-star Audrey Hepburn.

Sabrina is the only movie Sydney Pollack directed that was a remake.

Popular Dialogues

"Sabrina: More isn't always better, Linus. Sometimes it's just more."

"Linus Larrabee: So, that really is a beautiful name. How did you get it? Sabrina: My father's reading. It's in a poem. Linus Larrabee: Oh? Sabrina: "Sabrina fair, listen where thou art sitting under the glassy, cool, translucent wave, in twisted braids of lilies knitting the loose train of thy amber-dropping hair." Sabrina: [laughs to herself] It's an incredible airplane - it's beautiful. I've never seen anything like it. Linus Larrabee: Ah, yes. [returns to reading his work papers] Sabrina: Don't you ever look out the window? Linus Larrabee: When do I have time? Sabrina: What happened to all that time we saved taking the helicopter? Linus Larrabee: [lightheartedly] I'm storing it up. Sabrina: [seriously] No, you're not. Linus Larrabee: [pause] So, your little poem - what does it mean? Sabrina: It's the story of a water sprite who saved a virgin from a fate worse than death. Linus Larrabee: And Sabrina's the virgin. Sabrina: [quietly] Sabrina's the savior."
