Raven Song is surprisingly densely structured for a movie with static images that frequently feels purposefully slow. Wheeler-dealer Abu Sagr, a tow truck driver by trade, appears to have his hands in many different pies. Soon after the journalist's piece is published, Nasser the Raven finds himself being forced into the rear of a windowless van that has been converted into a club room with a group of poetry aficionados and being pushed to choose sides in a discussion between modernists and traditionalists who are morally opposed to blank verse. Conservative classicists and free-form liberals were pitted against one another in what was essentially a misplaced political war by Saudi poets and critics in the newspaper columns of Riyadh over the proper use of meter and rhyme. The director was inspired by this and made a beautiful movie out of this which definitely deserves to be watched. It might not be for all, but is definitely commendable.
