Many critics of the time were offended by Michael Powell's use of himself and his real life son as Mark Lewis's father and the young Mark Lewis respectively. They thought Powell overly identified with the movie and that the use of his son bordered on abuse. In interviews as an adult, Powell's son has admitted he finds these criticisms laughable.
The critical mauling and public outcry about the film resulted in it being pulled from British cinemas after just five days.
One of Martin Scorsese's favorite films. Coincidentally, Scorsese's lifelong editor Thelma Schoonmaker was married 1984-90 to Michael Powell, the director of this film.
The scandal which the movie aroused destroyed the career of director Michael Powell.
In Mark Lewis' "home movies," Prof. A.N. Lewis is played by director Michael Powell, young Mark Lewis is played by Powell's real-life son, Columba Powell, and Mark's mother, seen lying lifelessly in bed, is played by Columba's real-life mother, Frankie Reidy.
"Mark Lewis: Do you know what the most frightening thing in the world is? It's fear."
"Mrs. Stephens: [referring to Mark] I don't trust a man who walks quietly. Helen Stephens: He's shy. Mrs. Stephens: His footsteps aren't. They're stealthy."
