Eventually Spiner became less nervous as filming went on and said that Lemmon and Matthau had wonderful chemistry together which helped him get better into character. Spiner actually did not read the script and accepted the role of Gil Godwyn immediately just to work with Lemmon and Matthau. He said the role of Gil was one "he waited for, for 20 years."
