Chris Cole's mother, Jennifer, was nervous to buy him a skateboard because she thought the were too dangerous. As an ICU nurse, she felt her experiences in the hospital was enough to convince Chris it wasn't worth the danger.
Cole's first major exposure was participating in a Rodney Mullen A-Team manual contest. Cole landed a manual with a nollie flip out, but it still only gained him an honorable mention. Even without placing in the contest, Rodney Mullen called Chris personally to thank him for entering the contest.
The film opens with Cole winning his first Street League championship at the 2013 Street League Super Crown competition.
Cole met his wife, Red, at a skate park when she was 16 and he was 20. The couple live in California with their two children.
Cole's signature look in his sponsor-me tape was a yellow camouflage t-shirt.
"Chris Cole: It took two years to actually convince my mother to buy me a skateboard because she was an ICU nurse and she was afraid I'd get hurt."
"Jennifer Cole: You know, we didn't know much about skateboarding then. It hadn't become mainstream. It was just, sort of, what the surfers did when there wasn't a decent surf."
