This film was previously in development at 20th Century Fox in 1986 with Diane Keaton as Mickey Dawson but the project was shelved after being deemed too similar to Ruthless People (1986).
The characters Ordell, Louis and Melanie were played by Samuel L. Jackson, Robert De Niro and Bridget Fonda, respectively, in Jackie Brown (1997).
The film had the original title of "The Switch" which is the title of a film Jennifer Aniston starred in alongside Jason Bateman in 2010.
In this film, "Mr. Walker" is actually seen while in Jackie Brown (1997), he is only mentioned in conversation or spoken to on the phone. In the latter he resides in Mexico not Freeport, Bahamas (though he does in the book Rum Punch).
Dennis Quaid was considered for the part of Frank Dawson before Tim Robbins was cast.
"Mickey Dawson: [talking about Melanie] She looks like a million bucks."
"Ordell Robbie: So Richard, I got a little joke for you, you might like this one. You too, Lewis. A Dude goes to the doctor. Doctor says: "Sir, you have to stop masturbating". The patient goes: "Why?" And the doctor goes: "because I'm trying to exam you"."
