  • Story:
Music, film and narration form a poetic meditation on memory and loss in Jóhann Jóhannsson's breathtaking multimedia work, Last and First Men. Based on the cult science fiction novel by Olaf Stapledon, it combines music, film and narration from Tilda Swinton, sitting somewhere between fiction and documentary. Images of a decaying futuristic landscape – filmed in 16mm black and white in the former Yugoslav republics – are placed against Jóhannsson’s haunting orchestral score, crafted over seven years, before its premiere at the 2017 Manchester International Festival.

TRIVIA

Trivia

Feature directorial debut of composer Jóhann Jóhannsson. He previously directed End of Summer (2014), a short film about the Antarctic.

The structures shown throughout the film are called Spomeniks. They are former Yugoslavian World War II monuments and memorials built starting in 1945 and continuing throughout the 1970's. Their architectural style is called Brutalist, which uses minimalist construction and emphasizes the raw building materials and structural elements over more decorative types of design. They were commissioned to and designed by many different notable sculptors from the area. They were mostly abandoned since the Yugoslav Wars and the dissolution of Yugoslavia in the early 1990's.
