The name of this character comes from the American folk tale/song hero 'John Henry' In the 'Ballad of John Henry', his prowess as a steel-driver was measured in a race against a steam-powered rock drilling machine, a race that he won only to die in victory with hammer in hand as his heart gave out from stress.
Although the poster imagery shows actor Terry Crews holding a metal hammer with the name "John Henry", this movie has no relation to the DC Comics superhero "Steel" whose name is John Henry Irons and (upon Superman's death) decided to create a heavily armored "steel" suit with his main weapon being a smart sledgehammer to carry on the Man of Steel's legacy.
