TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

Some people have questioned whether or not a strong tornado could actually lift an aircraft like a 747 as depicted in the movie. Tornadoes have been known to pick up railroad engines before. An SD40-2 locomotive which is an average sized locomotive weighs 368,000 lbs. An empty 747-400 weighs 393,000 lbs, so there is not that great of a weight difference. Also, the wings would make the 747 more aerodynamic than the dead weight of a locomotive. So theoretically it would be possible for a 747 to be picked up by a strong tornado.

In a clear homage to Twister (1996) , a statue of a cow is blown off a building and across the screen.

Some of the news footage & radar images shown on the screens behind Allison in the storm chaser van, was actual news reports/footage from the ef5 tornado that hit Moore, Oklahoma on May 20, 2013.

Some of the movie was based upon the tornado that hit Joplin on May 22, 2011. Scenes at the end were from Joplin.

When watching the news in the hotel room right before the large hail storm begins, the "local" broadcast features anchorman Steve Garagiola and weatherman Chuck Gaidica. These two are the real anchorman and weatherman for WDIV (NBC affiliate Channel 4 in Detroit, Michigan), though the film clearly takes place in Oklahoma.

Popular Dialogues

"Gary: Everybody out, now! Let's go! Principal Thomas Walker: What are you doing? Are you out of your mind? Gary: There's another tornado heading this way Principal Thomas Walker: And you want us to go outside? Gary: You don't understand. Allison: Yes you have to. Principal Thomas Walker: This is a storm shelter for Christ's sake. Pete: Not for this Allison: Will you please believe us. We have been out there and we know what this thing can do. Principal Thomas Walker: I am not going to risk having hundreds of dead people... Gary: You will have hundreds of dead people if you stay here. Allison: Sir. I have been studying storms all my life, alright? This one is bigger than any one that has ever been. Do you hear that? It will flatten this building in seconds. Gary: With or without you, we're getting these people onto those busses right now."

"Gary: That was good thinking with that knife back there. Trey: I thought you'd be mad. Gary: Oh I am. Hand it over."
