Official submission of Indonesia for the 'Best International Feature Film' category of the 93rd Academy Awards in 2021.
This movie was made based on Joko Anwar bad dreams in 2008.
The scene at the end of the movie, when Maya stops a driver and jumps into his pickup truck, and keeps laughing maniacally, is a direct reference to Tobe Hooper's 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre', which ends with the female protagonist escaping Leatherface in the back of a pickup truck.
Joko Anwar wrote the script several years earlier, and started filming on 2019.
Tara Basro, Ario Bayu, Arswendy Bening Swara and Marissa Anita are frequently seen in Joko Anwar's films.
"Maya: Do you know the prayer for dead people? Dini: You're asking me? Just say it in Indonesian! Do you think that God only knows Arabic?"
"Professor on the Bus: I cough sometimes so the spirits on this bus won't bother the passengers."
