This was Kirk Douglas' final film before his death on February 5, 2020 at the age of 103.
Kirk Douglas was 87 years old during production, making him one of the oldest leading actors in film.
Michael Goorjian spent about six and a half years of his life working on this film.
Goorjian started out with practically no script. First, he shot the "teenage" film, then went to the goth film, and finally the ending. He then approached Kirk Douglas to offer him a role in the movie.
"[first lines] Narrator: The story doesn't end when you get here, like you think it might. All the mortal pieces have scattered, but the impressions remain. Every last one of them."
"Stan: Listen, I know it's a little startling, that's why I sat here for awhile while you were sleeping. I didn't want to scare you, then I figured, "How the heck could you be scared of a guy that's got a cup of coffee?""
