The film is dedicated to "Hemshaw and Jasway who galloped valiantly in the service of the film". The horses Hemshaw and Jasway were killed by a freak lightening strike some weeks after filming was complete.
The Montana Kid mocks the RCMP numerous times throughout the film. This is ironic, considering Paul Gross (who plays the Montana Kid) was famous for playing Benton Fraser, the RCMP officer on Due South (1994).
All of Graham Greene's scenes are on horseback.
When the movie failed to attract the Canadian public, there was some public discussion as to why Canadians chose not to see it. Two theories that were repeatedly brought up by journalists was that actor Paul Gross was not only not a big enough star to attract a big audience, but that what the public previously saw him in was an actor with an affable personality, one that did not fit the role of a hardened American gunfighter.
Sean's hand-written will is comprised of word-for-word excerpts from George Washington's will, including the word "Imprimis" (from Latin, meaning "Firstly").
"Jane: I guess this is the part where you become a charming memory. The Montana Kid: Not quite. Uh, turns out there's a fair bit of debt that has to be satisfied before I can leave this, uh, this town. [reading] The Montana Kid: I owe fer nine bullets, one tea cup, one shear pin, one case o' snails, one carrot, laundry and sewin' services, 4 horse shoes, one portrait of a ugly lady, one bag o' cats... Wait a minute. Oh, that's oats."
"The Montana Kid: Where am I? Adell Kwon: In the Dominion of Canada. The Montana Kid: Ooh just when you thought it couldn't get any worse."
